Guardian Unlimited
3. Guardian Unlimited
3.1. Introduction
The Manchester Guardian was founded by JE Taylor in 1821, as a weekly newspaper
with a liberal slant. In 1936, the Scott Trust was formed to maintain the editorial
independence of the paper in the face of interest from competitors and the potential
cost of death duties in the event of the death of the owners. In 1959 the title
changed from the Manchester Guardian to the Guardian to reflect the growing
importance of national and international affairs in the paper, and in 1961 the paper
begins printing in London as well as Manchester. In 1993 the Guardian Media Group
purchased the Observer, the world s oldest Sunday newspaper. In 1994, the
Guardian is the first UK newspaper to devote a section to to IT, Science and
technology on Thursdays.
Following the success of the Eurosoccer football website, dedicated to coverage of
the Euro 96 football championship, Guardian was added to the existing jobs website
Recruitnet in 1997. Finally, in January 1999 the Guardian Unlimited network of
websites is launched, bringing a distinctive and innovative approach to online
newspaper publishing.
