new colleagues. Through the training program, the Correspondent Network for
Independent Journalism, TOL acts as an incubator for up and coming talent by
offering these journalists ongoing, intensive journalism training and the added
benefit of joining a network of like minded individuals.
3. To act as a pioneer in Internet non profit publishing, demonstrating the
potential of the Internet for strengthening independent media and NGOs in the
post communist world. TOL s long term goal is self sustainability, and TOL plans
to develop all relevant income streams to lessen its dependence on grants, in
the process becoming a model for other prospective Internet publishers of
Since July 1999, TOL has produced thousands of articles analyses of breaking news,
week in review items, opinion pieces, and dozens of thematic special features
providing in depth coverage on topics ranging from corruption to ethnic minorities
to conflicts in Central Asia, from EU expansion to Balkan reconstruction to youth in
post communist societies.
Content sharing and editorial partnerships with leading global and local media,
ensuring that TOL s coverage reaches as wide an audience in the region as possible
and around the world. In return, TOL s editorial partners including CNN.com,
Time.com, MediaChannel.org, OneWorld.org, Eurasianet.org, Prague Watchdog
(http://www.watchdog.cz), and Croatian news agency Stina benefit from TOL
partner promotions, TOL s journalistic expertise, and a pooling of resources.
In December 2000, TOL began hosting a number of interactive discussions on events
in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union for WashingtonPost.com.
4.2. Revenue model
TOL has two main products: content and advertising space.
1. a) Product Line: Access to TOL Content
TOL offers new articles free of charge for a limited period. All older articles are
archived and are available only by payment. The current subscription model can be
divided into two categories, based on the user s origins. Western users are charged
for 12 month memberships, receiving unlimited access to all new or archived
articles, online resources, the TOL Wire, and The Balkan Reconstruction Report. East
Europeans will continue to qualify for free memberships, allowing them unrestricted
access to all the features listed above.
1. b) Product Line: Syndication
TOL offers its content to other publications. This takes three forms:
1. Syndication through established syndication services.
2. Syndication directly to clients.
3. Provision of commissioned content for clients.
