UK government websites need revamping 
Nov 06 2002: A large number of high profile government websites in the UK are in need of a drastic overhaul,
according to a new study from Interactive Bureau. The study examined 20  flagship  websites using criteria
established by the e Envoy s office, the official agency with responsibility for strategic IT development within
government.It found that three quarters the websites studied needed immediate attention for a number of reasons
including a lack of basic services and information, bad navigation, technical errors, poor or inconsistent design and
failure to respond to constituents email enquiries.
Number 10., the Prime Minister s official website, came second from last in the report, scoring just 40.75
percent out of a possible 100. 
The report notes that the site allowed foreign journalists to ask the Prime Minister questions, but didn t offer the
opportunity for constituents to do so.
A number of other government websites including the Child Support Agency s site, were criticised for a heavy reliance
on bureaucratic language.
The best government website was deemed to be the Department of Education s, with 78.5 percent score. 
The website for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency was considered to be the worse site reviewed and scored
just 40 percent.
The study s authors suggest that the government should consider halting its GBP5 billion (7.79 billion) egovernment
programme to put the whole of government online and concentrate on revamping the websites that are already live.
