joint venture of local newspaper companies. The collaboration might lead to take overs
of existing newspapers in Barcelona or to the creation of new newspapers. As result,
its revenue model is diversified, consisting of many different products and services.
The central concept of Vilaweb, i.e. the proximity of information through its local
network, enabled by a powerful database and easy to use editorial software, might
be a concept to be exported, according to co director Vicent Partal. Maybe the
challenge for the future is in generating VilaWebs in other countries and continents
by exploiting the know how and machinery we have developed. It would constitute
a global journalistic concept based on locality and providing a real alternative to the
global media, based on plurality and difference.
The idea of independent journalism has always been crucial for the VilaWeb
founders. Company independence is secondary to this. In the future, new partners
may come in if they respect and support our policy and if more money is needed
for instance, to develop new products . The original owners will probably keep the
majority share though. Because in many regions in Spain, a really independent
press is not noticeable. Sometimes we say that we became owners just to be able
to do the kind of journalism we like.
