The parameters used in the simulation are given in Table 3.1. The default cache
size (S
cache
) of a node is 128 MBytes and N
node
is the number of nodes in the cluster.
To maximize the local cache hit, the most frequently requested files are replicated in
each Web server [23]. Initially, 15% of the memory size is assigned to the replicated
files, and we vary the replication percentage to show the performance difference. Table
3.2 summarizes the system and network timing values used in our experiments. These
values are obtained from measurements on a 16 node Linux (2.4.7 10) cluster, connected
through a 16 port Myrinet switch.
Each node of this cluster is an Athlon 1.76 GHz uni processor machine, with 1
GBytes memory and a PCI based on board intelligent NIC. We have ported and modified
the Berkeley VIA [19] to use for our intra cluster communication. In addition, we have
implemented all prior coscheduling techniques on the cluster using a generic framework
[3, 27]. Opening of a TCP connection between the cluster and a client costs 0.145 ms
and reading a file from a disk incurs a latency of (28m + 328 s per 4 KBytes). If the
