Using FrontPage & Access 2000 to Develop Online Data Forms
Overview of Course Materials and Logistics
This workshop is intended for Institutional Researchers with some knowledge and strong
interest in Web form design and data collection. It is designed to provide a step by step
instruction and hands on practice for the participants to develop a Web based on line form
using FrontPage 2000 and MS Access 2000.
In this workshop, we will introduce the ASP (Active Server Pages) technology by designing a
data collecting form through the Web. Then we will design another form, which will allow
Web based real time queries of the data collected. We chose the ASP method and the two
software packages not only because they are among the most commonly used on various
campuses, but also their seamless interface with each other coupled with their GUI
functions allow the non programmers in IR to do programmers jobs.
Owing to the fact that every university tightly safeguards its Web servers, the fact that it is
not uncommon for people to make mistakes in learning, we decided to take advantage of
Microsoft s Personal Web Server (PWS Version 4). We chose PWS because it provides a
convenient and inexpensive development environment without the need for powerful
hardware. It runs on a desktop PC under Windows 9x environment.
This manual has been developed and compiled by the workshop instructors in order to aid
the participants in the learning. It consists of screen snapshots (sometimes called screen
dump) and step by step instructions to guide you in every step along the way.
Typographic Conventions
We use a number of different styles of text and layout in the manual to help differentiate
between the various styles of information. Below are examples of the styles we use along
with explanations of what they mean:
FONTS, TYPES
MEANINGS, REASONS
Numbers
All instructions are organized into sets of steps and each step
has a number
fixed space fonts

TAB
.
