4.4 Saving a page
After all of your hard work, you'll want to be sure to save it. In most cases your local
site settings are established to save files into a folder on your computer. This means
that simply saving your documents in Dreamweaver will only update the file copies
on your computer, and not on the server. Updating the copies on the server, requires
an additional process that you'll learn about later. See Getting and Putting Files on
page 22.
File naming conventions
Here are a few tips to consider when naming documents in your website. This
includes all files, be they web pages, images, or additional documents such as
Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint files.
The initial web page in your website, the page that automatically displays when a
user enters the main web address, is in the main website folder and is often named
index
or
default
(depending on how the web server is configured).
File and folder names should never include spaces. Although not entirely detri
mental, spaces in file and folder names can cause difficulty with some browsers.
Consider using a hyphen or underscore in place of a space.
The shorter the filename, the less that you and the Internet viewers have to type.
Saving files
If this is the first time you are saving the file, choose File > Save, select the appro
priate folder, provide an appropriate File name, and click OK.
To quickly save a file, click the Save icon on the Standard toolbar.
To save all open files at once, choose File > Save All,
OR click the Save All icon on the Standard toolbar.
4.5 Previewing a page
Even before you transfer the web documents from your computer to the web server,
you still have the opportunity to view them as they would display on the Internet. The
preview method isn't 100% accurate, but it's often close enough to the real thing.
The following methods assume that your Macromedia Dreamweaver MX program
has been configured to use your browser of choice for previewing web pages.
Choose File > Preview in Browser and select the appropriate browser.
Press F12 (Win).
Click the Preview/Debug in Browser icon on the Document toolbar and select
the browser of choice.
