Chapter 8 Best Practices
Because of variations in the way web browsers (Microsoft Internet Explorer,
Netscape Navigator) and platforms (Microsoft Windows, Macintosh OS, Linux, etc.)
display web pages, it is always a good idea to test your sites on as many different
computer platform and browser combinations as possible. However, since most web
authors lack the time and resources to test more than one combination, the following
tips should help you avoid common issues when designing your web site.
It is best to get an idea of your website's target audience before you design. This will
help you judge the features of the website that will require special consideration dur
ing design. For example, if your website targets young children, you would consider
using larger fonts and bright colors. If your audience is primarily on campus users,
you can feel fairly comfortable that they have a fast connection speed, and therefore
don't have to worry as much about using multiple images on your webpage.
Your webpage is an informational marketing tool. You want to be sure it is conve
niently accessible to your patrons.
