Web Hosting Getting Started Guide 168
Yahoo! Web Hosting measures disk space and data transfer in megabytes.
Adobe GoLive is an advanced site building and management tool perfect for those with experience using Adobe visual
design products such as PhotoShop or Illustrator. Yahoo! supports makes it easy to use GoLive with your Web
Hosting account. (Please note that GoLive and other third party software must be purchased separately from Yahoo!
An online guestbook is a type of online form that allows site visitors to sign in, leave comments or feedback, and
review previous messages. Yahoo! Web Hosting offers two guestbook tools: Guestbook, available to all users, allows
you to easily add a simple interactive guestbook to your web site. Advanced Guestbook, a PHP based feature
available only to users with Web Hosting Standard and Web Hosting Professional plans, offers additional interactivity
and functionality, such as preview, templates, and message editing.
Your home page is the main page of your web site, the page your site visitors will see when they go to your domain,
such as http://www.widgetdesigns.com. The file that generates this default web page (often called the index page)
when you create your site with Yahoo! Web Hosting is called "index.html." A site
visitor can see your home page when he enters either
http://www.widgetdesigns.com or http://www.widgetdesigns.com/index.html in
the address bar of his web browser.
We automatically created an "Under Construction" home page for you at your
web address when you signed up for your plan. When you build your own web
site or page using a Yahoo! tool, your home page will be named "index.html"
automatically and replace the "Under Construction" page we created for you. Be
sure you do not change the name of this file, or your new home page will not
display at your domain. If you create your home page using a third party tool, be
sure to name your main page "index.html."
.htaccess (Hypertext Access)
The name .htaccess refers to the main configuration file for Apache, a popular open source HTTP server. The
.htaccess file can be used to create custom error pages and web page redirects, set up password protection, enable
SSI, and more. Yahoo! does not currently allow you to upload .htaccess files to your account. For other customization
options, we recommend the Custom Error Pages and password protection features available in your Web Hosting
HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language, is a formatting language used to create web pages and documents. HTML
consists of sets of codes (called tags) that are used to control the way a document is displayed by a web browser,
such as Netscape Navigator/Communicator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. A document that is formatted using HTML
tags such as the page you re viewing now is called an HTML document.
The Internet is a complex system of many interconnected computer networks that communicate with each other
using a data transmission protocol called TCP/IP. The Internet is not the same as the World Wide Web; in fact, the
Web is only part of the Internet, along with email, FTP, and other communication and data routes.
Your ISP, or Internet Service Provider, is the company through which you gain access to the Internet, typically using
a dial up or broadband connection (a connection through your phone line or another dedicated data route from your
home or office). Some ISPs might provide services such as email, disk space, or web hosting in addition to Internet
access. Although Yahoo! Web Hosting includes these services and many more, it does not provide Internet access;
you will need to continue service with your ISP to access the Internet and your Web Hosting plan.
